(Obituary)
Aquilla “Viv” was born on June 8th, 1944 to the late Curtis and Marie Person in Greensboro, NC. She is the late wife of the late James Lanier. She was called home to rest on May 22nd, 2024, at Beacon Place after a long-fought battle with chronic respiratory issues.
She was educated in the Guilford County School System. She was an alumnus of Dudley High School. While at Dudley High, she was a thespian and was involved with the drama club, where she engaged in several plays. She graduated from Dudley High School in 1961. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the North Carolina A&T State University, where she graduated with honors (Magna Cum Laude). From there, she worked in various sectors of accounting, including with the City of Greensboro as an internal auditor, with Southeast Greensboro Youth Developmental Council as an Accountant and Program Business Administrator, and with United Services for Older Adults as a Finance Director and Assistant Director of Programs. She retired from Greensboro Urban Ministries as a Director of Finance in 2009.
She was an active member of the Church of God and Saints of Christ (COGASOC) – 3rd Tabernacle. Prior to her sickness, she enjoyed sitting in the congregation and singing in her alto and baritone voices to the sweet songs of Zion.
Aquilla was such a loving and kind person. She would take care of anyone in need. She would give anyone the clothes on her back if she could. Once you encountered her, you would surely remember her soft and sweet spirit. She was soft-spoken and appreciated the small things in life, like reading a good book, planting, listening to music, meditating, singing, taking a sip of Coca-Cola, and eating her favorite cookies, Oreos.
Aquilla is preceded in death by her sisters, Rhoda Person Randolph and Phyllis Person Lewis. She is survived by her son Michael, her granddaughters Tiffany and Miata, her son-in-law Andrew, her great-granddaughter Makeba, her brother Jimmy, and sister-in-law Louise, and a host of nieces, nephews, church members, family and friends
