Othneil Hairston Obituary

Mr. Othneil Eugene Hairston, SR, affectionally known to many as “Stump”,  80, of Greensboro, North Carolina passed away peacefully the morning of November 26, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital surrounded by his loving and devoted family after a long period of declining health.

Othneil was born August 15, 1941 in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Josephine “Sis “Robinson and raised by his grandmother Josephine Hairston Robinson, who also preceded him in death.  He was the oldest of two children.

Stump graduated James B. Dudley Senior High School in Greensboro, NC in 1959.  Soon after graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and was apart of the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper.  He often spoke with pride about his time in the military and how much he enjoyed jumping out of planes.  Stump received several medals during his service and received an honorable discharge in 1962. He would later go on to drive tractor trailers long distance for Kaiser Roth before moving on to work for and retire from the City of Greensboro and Benner & Fields.  He was an avid train enthusiast, volunteer for Dudley High School & N.C. A&T State University as well as various veterans’ organizations.

Stump met his first love Bettye Mary Murdock Hairston at Dudley High School and they married soon after.  They were married for 21 years before she preceded him in death.

Stump leaves to cherish his memory and legacy of love his sister, Andrea Allen King (Walter) of North

Carolina; his endearing & devoted “baby girl” as he always called her, Denita Y. Hairston of Washington;  son, Othneil Hairston Jr., (Afrika) & family of Texas. He also leaves two loving & compassionate granddaughters that were with him to the end, Mar Keshia L. Hairston & Parris T. Walters of North Carolina; grandsons, Justin

Hairston of Texas, Brian Hairston (Brittany), of New Jersey;  great grandsons that he adored, Landon & Logan

Hairston, & Grayson Hairston, and a special friend Jacqueline Johnson; niece Delvon J. Allen & children Demari, Khia, Derrick, Harmony, Christian of North Carolina, Paula Herbin & family of North Carolina and a host of long time friends and extended family.

Per Othneil’s request, an intimate & private celebration of his life will be held  at an undisclosed time.
