Professor Derrick A. Leflore, born on December 21, 1966, in Eugene, Oregon, to the late Dr. Robert Leflore and Dr. Dorothy Leflore, passed away surrounded by love and cherished memories. Derrick grew up in Mississippi and was a proud graduate of Calloway High School, where he was a member of the class of 1984.
With a passion for coding and programming that ignited at an early age, Derrick pursued his post-secondary education at Jackson State University, majoring in technology. However, he ventured into the workforce before completing his degree, taking a position as a certified instructor at Borland Software Corporation. It was there that he discovered his true calling: teaching. Recognizing the significant demand for African American instructors in the software field, Derrick returned to his studies at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in May 2012 and a Master of Science degree in Computer Science in December 2019.
In the spring of 2020, Derrick became a full-time Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, where he made a profound impact on his students. He was dedicated to producing well-rounded programmers, instilling a strong work ethic, and teaching effective problem-solving skills. Derrick believed in leveraging his industry experience to enhance his students’ learning, and the fruits of his labor continue to inspire them.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Derrick had a deep love for music, spending countless hours practicing the bass. He was also known for his culinary skills and love of hosting gatherings, delighting friends and family with crab boils at tailgates and tomahawk steaks for no particular reason. Visitors to his home were always welcomed with warmth and left with full hearts and satisfied appetites.
Derrick is preceded in death by his father, Dr. Robert Leflore. He leaves behind his beloved mother, Dr. Dorothy Leflore; his brother, Darryl Leflore; his loving and faithful wife, Constance Leflore; and five children, Justin Wilson (Alexis), Charles Leflore, Paris Leflore, Christian Wilson, Aaron Wilson, Tristan Williams- Leflore and one grandson Kenneth. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who will cherish his memory.
Derrick A. Leflore’s legacy of passion, dedication, and love will forever resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. And in the loving words of Derrick “THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID” If you know you know!!!!!
